This visiting fellowships is made possible thanks to Depuy Synthes. The programme provides fellowship visits with a focus on the fields of total hip arthroplasty (with particular focus on anterior approach for THR) and hip arthroscopy. 

The objective is to allow orthopaedic surgeons to develop their surgical skills in a sub-speciality through a work-based surgical program provided by JACOMPOR ASSOCIATION FOR DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION IN ORTHOPEDICS AND SPORTS MEDICINE. 

A TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP FUND of up to 750€ will be awarded by JACOMPOR to each Fellow to cover the cost os transport, accommodation, food and the other essential expenses. 

Application Eligibilty Criteria

To be eligible for the fellowship program, you must be an orthopaedic surgeon or an orthopedic resident

  • Have sufficient English, Portuguese or Spanish language skills in order to understand and participate in all aspects of the program including complex discussions on human issue
  • make yourself available for the duration of the Fellowship
  • be prepared to submit a written report at the end of the programme
  • to be prepared to make 2 presentations of a specific research topic or topic of interest
 

PROGRAM GOALS

The primary aim of the fellowship is to improve understanding and treatment of structural variations in the hip and pelvis, with an emphasis on, coxarthrosis, femoroacetabular impingement, osteonecrosis, and residual deformities from childhood hip disease, such as slipped capital femoral epiphysis and Perthes disease.  The fellowship provides a high-volume surgical exposure to anterior hip approach THR and hip arthroscopy.  Fellows will have a graduated clinical experience to develop skills in physical examination of the hip, interpreting specialized imaging, formulating treatment options and performing hip preservation procedures.
 
  • Advantages of the anterior minimally invasive surgery: a muscle-sparing and inter- nerve approach that minimizes damage to soft tissues, contributing to a faster patient’s recovery, short incision, less dislocation rate and shorter hospital stay.

  •   How and what to see and check in X-Ray, TAC and RMN of the hip.

  •   How to perform a correct clinical examination of a patient with hip pathologies.

  •   The importance of restoring the adequate offset besides leg length in THR.

  •   Advantages of using anterior hip approach

  •  Indications and contra-indications THR, hip arthroscopy

  • How to manage hip pain in young and active patients.

  • FAST Track protocol for THR.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The fellowship education features:

  • One-to-one real-time learning in the office and operating room with Dr. JORGE CRUZ DE MELO and Dr. FERNANDO LEAL
  • Bimonthly didactic sessions and journal club meetings
  • Research opportunities in surgical outcomes, hip and pelvic anatomy and basic science
  • Cadaveric lab for surgical skills training (Not included in stipend)

A Porto Hip Unit aceita fellows tanto nacionais como internacionais.. O programa de formaçao da Porto Hip Unit - JACOMPOR dá a oportunidade a jovens cirurgiões de visitarem, na Europa, um centro de ensino reconhecido pelos seus altos padrões de excelência clínica e científica.

Somos uma Unidade especializada no diagnostico e tratamento da patologia da anca (artroscopia da anca, endoscopia trocanterica, subglutea e isquiatica, artroplastia da anca abordagem anterior direta, revisao artroplastia da anca). 

Procuramos o desenvolvimento, apoio e promoção de trabalhos científicos e atividades académicas.

Desde o ano 2014 recebemos medicos de todo o mundo que querem enriquecer a sua formação partilhando experiencias e conhecimentos tutelados por membros da nossa equipa.

Recebemos até a data, na nossa Unidade, a visita de médicos ortopedistas em formação dos seguintes paises:

Brasil, Bulgaria, China, Espanha, Grecia, Hungria, India, Angola, Nigeria, Polonia, Portugal e Russia

A Porto Hip Unit organiza cada dois anos o Porto International Hip Meeting e anualmente o Hip Lab Practical Course (Curso de cirurgia da anca em cadáver) . O Porto International Hip Meeting, pela sua história e reconhecimento nacional e internacional, mantém-se como uma referência internacional na discussão da patologia e tratamento da anca no adulto jovem. 

Os Hip Lab Practical Course sao cursos eminentemente práticos sobre o tratamento da patologia da anca (Infiltrações da Anca, Traumatologia da Anca, Artroscopia da anca, Artroplastia da Anca, Revisao de Artroplastia da Anca).

O nosso programa de fellowship oferece:

  • Aprendizagem One-to-one real-time no consultório e no bloco operatorio com o Dr. Jorge Cruz de Melo e o Dr. Fernando Leal.

  • Hip Lab Practical Course com praticas das vias de abordagem, anatomia da anca e cirúrgicas (artroplastia total da anca abordagem anterior direta) em cadáver (fellowship mínimo de 2 meses). Valor desta formaçao nao incluida no Fellowship

  • Sessões de formação e jornal club meetings mensais

  • Oportunidades para realização de trabalhos, artigos e pesquisa cientifica.
